BIG MEADOWS

The name comes from the large, grassy meadow near the resort. At an elevation of 3,510 feet, legend has it that the meadow was kept open by native tribes to encourage the growth of wild berries and to attract deer, elk, and bison to graze. Today deer are still seen here, particularly during the evening and early morning hours.

Accommodations at historic Big Meadows range from 25 rooms in the main lodge to 72 additional rooms in rustic cabins, multiunit lodges and modern suites. The original lodge was built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps private contractors, and mountain labor with stones cut from Massanutten Mountain. The entire interior structure of the lodge, including the paneling is made from native oak and chestnut trees. Chestnuts are virtually extinct due to the chestnut blight that arrived in this country in 1905. Rates: $67 - $242 per night.
